Country-of-manufacture and Country-of-Brand origin in a B2B ContexT
Abstract
Many firms today have a global presence resulting in well known companies designing, manufacturing and assembling then selling products in different countries. It is common to find that products are manufactured in one country, branded in another, and sold in yet another. The country of manufacture (COM) is thus often different from the country of brand origin (COBO) and this may have a profound effect on the reputation of the brand. The purpose of this study is to determine the relative importance of COM and COBO against the functional attributes for industrial compressors in the B2B market. We conducted a conjoint analysis experiment amongst users of industrial compressors for refrigeration. Our results show that buyers prefer to buy a product that is manufactured in the developed world rather than from the BRIC countries even though it carries the brand from the country of origin.
